Kharkhorin

Karakorum was established as the capital of the Mongol Empire by the decree of Chinggis Khaan in 1220 and officially became the empire’s capital during the reign of Ögedei Khaan. Founded in the 13th century, the city thrived as a major hub along the Silk Road before being destroyed by an invasion from the Ming Dynasty in 1388.

Ulaan Tsutgalan

According to legend, the Ulaan River was once dry, with only gravel covering its bed. During a revolution, Mongolian soldiers were fleeing from enemy troops when they reached the riverbed. Among them was a learned soldier who cried out, “Oh, Red River, flow red!” Suddenly, a red-hued flood surged down the river, sweeping away the enemy soldiers and carrying them over the Ulaan Tsutgalan Waterfall.

Tuvkhun Monastry

Tövkhön Monastery was founded in 1648 by Zanabazar, the first spiritual leader of Mongolia, on Shireet Ulaan Mountain, at an altitude of 2,600 meters above sea level. Surrounded by dense forests, this secluded spot was chosen as a place for meditation, and in 1651, a temple was built. It was here that Zanabazar created the Soyombo script, which is now a key symbol on Mongolia’s national flag

Questions and answers

Mongolia is a vast country of wide-open steppes. We will mostly travel on paved roads, though some journeys will involve dirt roads. However, rural roads are generally flat and smooth, so you won't feel much discomfort. We use fully air-conditioned Japanese and Korean minibuses for most transfers. For countryside adventures, we use 4WD vehicles (such as Mitsubishi Delica, Hyundai Starex, and Russian-made vans). Each minivan accommodates up to 5 passengers. All vehicles are fully insured and operated by experienced drivers.
Throughout the trip, you will be accompanied by an English-speaking Mongolian guide.A kitchen staff member will travel with us, along with a yak cart carrying kitchen supplies. We will also have the assistance of local herders and horsemen during certain activities.
No special physical fitness is required to join this tour. However, some activities such as walking and optional horseback riding are part of the experience. We recommend reading the detailed itinerary for more information. To fully enjoy the trip, it is enough to be able to walk 1–2 miles (2–5 km) per day at your own pace. Some group walks are planned but are completely optional. One activity includes an optional hike of approximately 2 miles up to a monastery.
We will mostly stay in traditional Mongolian gers — round, felt-covered tents that locals live in.While it may not be luxury hotel accommodation, it will likely be one of the most memorable experiences of your life.We will also spend three nights camping in tents along the shores of the Eight Lakes.
If you search online about Mongolian cuisine, you might wonder if there’s anything besides meat! It’s true that Mongolians love meat. However, the ger camps we stay at will provide hearty meals, usually including meat, potatoes, noodles, and rice, prepared in a European and Asian fusion style to accommodate various tastes.

Hike to Tövkhön Monastery We offer a hike to the beautiful Tövkhön Monastery: **4 km (2 miles)** uphill and downhill. It is a manageable hike, and everyone can proceed at their own pace. In some cases, horses or motorcycles may be used, but availability will depend on safety and trail conditions, and might not always be an option.

Expect to spend “2–8 hours” at a time in vehicles during travel days, with regular breaks for rest and restroom stops. Most roads are paved, but dirt roads and open grasslands are common when approaching eco-camps in natural areas. These routes are generally smooth without excessive bump
Mongolians are passionate about meat. However, vegetarian options are available at our accommodations (ger camps and hotels). Alcoholic beverages such as wine, beer, and vodka are available at most accommodations (not included in the tour price). If you have food allergies or special dietary needs, please note them during registration or contact us in advance with any concerns!
In short — No, do not drink tap water in Mongolia. Even if tap water is safe in some cities globally, Mongolia’s tap water may contain unfamiliar microorganisms that could cause stomach issues. Always use “bottled water” — even when brushing your teeth. If you wish to minimize plastic use, you can bring a reusable bottle and a portable sterilizer. Otherwise, bottled water will be readily available throughout the trip.
Temperatures will range from “50°F to 75°F (10°C to 24°C)”. Mongolia has a “high-altitude, extreme continental climate” — neighboring Siberian forests and Central Asian deserts.
